British Prince Harry and Meghan Markle reportedly considered adopting the Spencer surname — Princess Diana’s maiden name — for their family, amid ongoing tensions with the British royal family and complications surrounding their children's passport applications.
According to The Guardian, Harry believed UK officials were intentionally delaying the issuance of passports for his children, Archie and Lilibet, due to their use of the Sussex surname and HRH titles. In light of this, Harry is said to have discussed the possibility of changing the family name with his late mother’s brother, Charles Spencer.
While earlier reports suggested Spencer discouraged the idea, a Reuters source indicated that he did not oppose the move and that any legal challenges to a name change were manageable.
Harry and Meghan have lived in California since stepping back from royal duties in 2020. Since then, they’ve publicly criticised the monarchy through interviews, a Netflix series, and Harry’s memoir Spare. These actions have further strained Harry’s ties with the royal family, particularly with his father, King Charles III, and brother, Prince William.
In a recent BBC interview, Harry expressed a desire for reconciliation, although his relationship with King Charles remains difficult, especially amid disagreements over security during his visits to the UK.
