BAB gets new chairman after 17 years

Dhaka Bank Chairman Abdul Hai Sarkar has been elected as the new chairman of the Bangladesh Association of Banks (BAB).

Apart from this, First Security Islami Bank Chairman Mohammad Abdul Mannan and Bank Asia Chairman Romo Rauf Chowdhury became vice chairmen.

Abdul Hai succeeded Nazrul Islam Mazumdar, who held the position for the last 17 years.

The association of owners and investors in banks in the private sector formed the new ad hoc committee for the next 6 months.

In the changed situation of the country, this new ad hoc committee was formed in the general meeting of BAB held on Monday. According to BAB sources, the next committee of the association will be formed through elections after six months.

The new chairman of BAB, Abdul Hai Sarkar, said that BAB was disrupted due to various activities in the past. BAB does not want to be involved in any such activities from now on. The new committee will decide together what will be the future role of the organization.

Meanwhile, the organization's leadership changed after 17 years through the formation of an ad hoc committee. Nazrul Islam Majumder, the recently ex-chairman of Exim Bank, was in charge of the chairman of BAB for 17 consecutive years from 2008. However, according to BAB's memorandum, the tenure of a committee is three years.

Bangladesh Bank (Bb) removed Nazrul Islam Majumdar from the post of director and chairman of Exim Bank after this political change recently. As a result, he lost the chairmanship of BAB. Besides, two vice-chairmen of BAB also lost their positions as directors of the bank after the change of government.

As a result, these two also lost the eligibility to be in the leadership of BAB. They are the former chairman of Al-Arafah Islami Bank Abdus Samad Labu, brother of S Alam Group’s chairman. The other is United Commercial Bank (UCB) Vice Chairman Anisuzzaman Chowdhury, also brother of former land minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury.
